Chapter Eight

The sound of the door being slammed shut echoed through the apartment. The familiar noise brought a quick smile to Dylan’s face. He and Kayla both had been working a lot in the last week, making it very difficult for them to find time to be together.

Strangely, Dylan had found himself not only missing the sex between him and the Professor, but her company as well. This was the first time all week that the sound of her bare feet slapping against the wooden floor had rung out and he missed it, almost as much as he missed her.

“Morning,” he called out, as he closed his bedroom closet, but when he turned around what he saw startled him. His Energizer Bunny looked, for the lack of a better word, run down.

Kayla was dressed in her normal bright, badly put together outfit, but it was the lackluster look on her face that held his attention. Dark shadows circled her eyes and her skin was missing its usual glow. The sign of strain was evident in her face, breaking Dylan’s heart in half.

“Rough night?”

“In a word.” Kayla yawned, stretching her arms high above her head. The mustard yellow shirt she wore rose with her movement, bringing her pale tummy into view. Dylan had to focus hard to keep his gaze from traveling down her body.

This was not the time to think with his cock. It was time to think with his heart.

Dylan walked over to her and pulled his tired cherub into his arms. “When was the last time you slept?”

Kayla snuggled against his chest and loosely wrapped her arms around his waist. “Tenth grade, remember?”

“I’m serious, Kay.”

Sighing, Kayla curled into him like a kitten. “It’s been a long week.”

“Okay, let me rephrase my question.” Dylan brushed her dark locks away from her forehead, replacing her bangs with soft kisses. “If you had to estimate, how much sleep do you think you’ve had this week?”

“All together?”

“Yes.”

“I’d say…” Her silence wasn’t very reassuring. “Maybe ten or twelve hours.”

Dylan closed his eyes in resignation. Even after all this time, one would think he’d be used to her hectic schedule. But used to it or not, it was no way for anyone to live. Kayla was so tired she was practically dead on her feet.

“Don’t worry. All I need is a cup of your world famous coffee and I’ll be better than new.”

“Coffee is the last thing you need.”

Kayla pulled away and looked at him. Her full lips were spread in that secret smile of hers he’d come to love so much. “You think you know what I need better than I do?”

“Think, no. I know I do. You need a keeper.”

“Applying for the job?”

“Someone has to. You’re going to run yourself into the grave.”

“I’m just a little tired.”

“A little tired.” Dylan resisted the urge to snort his amusement. “That’s an understatement. Your bags have bags.”

“You’re not much on the flattery today.”

“You don’t need flattery. You need sleep.”

Kayla tried to shrug her shoulders as if she didn’t care, but the movement made her look more exhausted than she had before.
